That’s Dutch for we’ve travelled a bit! It’s like we can’t decide which way to go so we just go back and forth….here, there and everywhere. I’m looking forward to settling down in one spot for a while which is happening soon (more on that later).
Here’s the map of where we’ve been camping lately and a run down of the camp sites:
- Oparau Roadhouse – the name says it all really, it was a shop/cafe/petrol station with a car park for campers and caravans….for free! We loved it 😊 the WiFi was good and we had a fab dinner in the cafe.
- Kawhia camping ground – probably our favorite so far and we ended up staying for 3 days. Lovely guy running the place, it was a small site with everything we needed. Right next to the volcanic sand beaches. We were given shovels and directions and headed to the beach where we could dig (if you could find the right place) a hole in the beach to find the hot springs. After about an hour of probing (mainly with our toes 🤣) we were about give up when TJ found it! We started digging in the sand and the hot water started coming through, it was pretty amazing and worth the search! The kids loved it 👍🏻. On that campsite we met some really friendly people (Aussies and Dutchies) which was nice.
- Murphy’s Law Irish Pub – yep it was a pub! That’s what it was, with a separate car park with power hook up for campers and caravans. Great for 1 night with nice showers/toilets and a kitchen 👍🏻 grand!
- Muriwai Beach Campground – we were ready for a bit of luxury again and this place hit the spot. Right next to the beach, brand new facilities with piping hot showers…fab. The beach was full of surfers and we walked up into the cliffs to see hundreds of gannets nesting on the side of the cliff, pretty cool! We could see the eggs and the hatchlings, the kids were fascinated. The sea was wild so we stood for ages watching the waves crashing on the rocks and the surfers trying to catch a wave…..cooooool.😎.
- Te Aroha Holiday Park – that is where we are now. Nice little hillbilly campsite so we fit right in 🤠 . There is a fabulous zip line thingy for the kids and an adventure playground in the trees 👍🏻. The kids found some friends to play with too which is great, I even delayed their school work so they could play some more (what’s more important?). Nice place and we have stayed here 2 days….tomorrow we move on a bit further south as we are heading in the direction on Te Awamutu to go Wwoofing. What’s that I hear you ask? Well we need a new paragraph for that 🤣.
Wwoofing stands for Willing Workers on Organic Farms. Basically it is volunteer work in exchange for a place to stay. We have found a nice family on a dairy farm and we are heading there this Friday. I’m really curious What it’s going to be like and TJ is itching to get back to work! The family sounds nice and they have 2 kids so I know Rose & Thijs will love it 👍🏻😊
Laters!
