The boat stopped and the engine was switched off. We were in the middle of the Doubtful Sound, part of New Zealand Fiordland. The captain told us to go outside on deck and please be as quiet as possible. This is part of the boat trip that they have been doing for the past 50 years.
It was breathtaking. Only the sounds of the 100s of waterfalls, the gentle shower of rain and the occasional bird was to be heard. For about 10 minutes we stayed there like that, everyone with their own thoughts and just appreciating this wonderful part of the world. There were about 100 people on the boat and we were the only people to be found for over 100km.
It was actually quite emotional! But then again it doesn’t take much for me to well up 🙄. It is a moment that I will never forget.
Some of those mountains were over 1000m high, with beautiful cliff faces, waterfalls, rain forests, bush, mossy trees and huge fallen boulders. There are about 1000 earth quakes per year and many tree slides where the forrest shifts and falls into the water. The fjord is very deep, often over 400m deep.
I have uploaded some photos and a couple of films below, which I’m sure just do not justify how truly stunning this is in real life.
Leaves, wat een belevenis, geniet nog een paar maanden van al dat moois, dikke tuuuuuuut.
